Restaurant Reviews

These were all written off-the-cuff after having a good meal.

Public Kitchen, Wakefield MA

I forgot to ask what kind of dressing was on the bed of red lettuce under the deviled eggs appetizer, but it was just perfect. What a GREAT presentation! The greens offset whatever silly guilt the lovely bits of bacon might inspire. 😊
The draft beer selection is fascinating and our choices (Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale from Lexington KY for Steve and the Golden City IPA from Down the Road Beer Co in Everett MA for Wendy) were spectacular. Really. These folks know how to search out some fine beers. I am confident that all the beer, wine, mixed drinks, and hard liquor offerings are just as thoughtfully chosen.
We went for less adventurous entre selections for our first visit (the Public Burger for Steve and the Crab Cake Po’ Boy for Wendy) but were wowed by the pickled onions, pleasing texture of the brioche rolls, and, yes, the bacon on each. And those hand cut fries are sublime. I was at first thinking that they should have been more crisp, but I was soon just wallowing in the texture and flavor.
We decided to get a flatbread pizza to go since I was feeling so relaxed (we were walking so indulged in two beers each) that I knew I did not want to cook dinner later in the evening. We’ll be trying our Fungus Amongus selection later, but I am confident, based on what we were smelling as we carried it home, that it will be fabulous. On the advice of our super serving person Christina, we opted to leave the egg off since were taking it to go but will try it as described during a future visit.
And, speaking of our server, I was so relaxed and satiated that my brain function lapsed a bit and my tip calculation was off. My apologies. We will fix that the next time we are there!
Bottom line: The Public Kitchen is a great restaurant with great service, great food, and a pleasant atmosphere that is sure to please a wide variety of palates and personalities.

Sakura Organic, Wakefield MA

The place where Steve and I used to get Chinese takeout was just not tasting as good, so when I saw the Fusion menu at Sakura Organic, I had to try it. Short answer: MOST EXCELLENT! Longer answer:
The word “healthy” and the menu item “Pu Pu Platter” just don’t ever really mix, but Sakura Organic’s rendition was so much better than the fare offered by most Chinese restaurants. Of special note: the chicken wings were really impressive – batter-covered meaty pieces – so NOT the usual scrawny, hairy, greasy whole-wing things that seem to be the norm. And, each Crab Rangoon had an amazingly large portion of filling. They TOTALLY rocked!
The fried rice (house version) was superb – light, tasty, and with lovely big chunks of veggies, along with tasty morsels of pork, egg, and more, but without the overly fatty/crunchyish texture that is the norm.
We also got two entrees from the Healthy Dietary Menu, Bean Curd and Vegetable and Broccoli with Beef. They were both great – fresh, light yet satisfying, and full of flavor.
Next time, I plan to try the fried brown rice, which is offered with shrimp, chicken, or vegetables. Although, perhaps they might consider offering the house version with brown rice – that would be my 1st choice. 🙂
I always enjoy the food and service when eating at this restaurant, but, I appreciate the ability to order take-out or delivery. As an added bonus, for those times when you are really busy, you can order online and pay with a credit card, including designating your delivery tip, so all you need to do is say thank you when the food is delivered to your home or office.
We are lucky to have a number of great restaurants in Wakefield. Sakura Organic is definitely one of those at the top of the list.

Wicked Sweet Cakes and Treats, Bradford NH

Everything was excellent! My husband had the Conductor’s Breakfast Sandwich made with a croissant, I opted for lunch with the Ruby Ruby, and we both enjoyed the tortellini sausage soup of the weekend. I so needed this today. So glad you are so busy! We’ll be back. 🙂 UPDATE: We picked up some bagels yesterday and enjoying at home this Sunday morning. LOVE the texture, and the jalapeño is awesome. 🙂

Polish Prince Pierogi, Billerica MA

I bought a package of the sausage pierogi during the time of Covid via the Wilmington Farmers Market. And then they got lost in my freezer(s) until now, surviving our move to NH. The use-by date on the package is 10/25/20. Yes, as in 2020. FYI, they are delicious this day of 2/21/2023!
